The Root Races of Akshara
The Root Races of Akshara represent the cyclical “descent into matter,” a metaphysical process where life evolved from pure energy into dense physical form, resulting in civilizations that grow increasingly material but spiritually blind.
The Cycle of Descent
Unlike standard evolutionary models, the history of Akshara is defined by the Akashic Descent. Early races possessed immense spiritual power but lacked physical permanence. Later races gained durability and reason but lost their connection to the ether, leaving them vulnerable to the Mythos entities waiting beyond the veil.
| Epoch | Race | Nature | Role & Connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st Root | Elemental Titans | Pure Energy | The Architects. Vast, alien singularities of fire and storm. They did not inhabit the world; they formed it. |
| Constructs | The Dvergar | Living Stone | The Workers. Not a true Root Race, but elemental servitors forged to stabilize the cooling earth. The oldest playable lineage. |
| 2nd Root | The Saurians | Astral/Cold | The Failures. The first attempt at biological life, cold-blooded and spiritually ambitious, created by the entity Set. (Need to change god) |
| 3rd Root | The Lemurians | Biological | The Shapers. Uplifted primates who rejected stone technology for mastery over flesh and nature. |
| 4th Root | The Atlanteans | Psychophysical | The Nephilim. The “perfect” intersection of spirit and matter, eventually corrupted by the Yellow Sign. |
| 5th Root | Humans | Iron & Reason | The Sleepers. Possessing no natural magic, their ignorance of the true cosmos acts as a shield against madness. |
The Second Root: The Saurians
Also known as the Anunnaki, Naga, or the Cold Ones.
The Second Root Race marks the transition from elemental energy to astral biology. They were not evolved, but sculpted by the dark god Set on the lost continent of Mu. Because they were forged rather than born, they lack the chaotic spark of true life, possessing instead a cold, crystalline intellect.
- Nature: Saurians are driven by “limitless ambition.” They view other life forms not as equals, but as raw resources to be enslaved or reshaped. Their civilization was built on the domination of the Astral Plane.
- The God Wars: Their empire collapsed during the God Wars, where they were decimated by the planetary defense mechanisms known as the Orixa.
- Legacy: In the modern age, they are few in number but incredibly dangerous. They operate from the shadows, wielding Dark Magic and seeking to reopen the gates to the Void.
The Third Root: The Lemurians
Also known as the Flesh-Shapers, The Uplifted, or Children of the Lawgiver. NEEDS TO SPECIFICALLY INDICATE THAT THESE ARE THE SIMIAN APE-MEN.
Originating on the continent of Lemuria, this race represents the world’s first true biological mastery. Their progenitor, the enigmatic Lawgiver, sacrificed their own immortality to “uplift” the primal simian stock of the island into sentience.
- Biomancy: Rejecting the stone and metal of the Dvergar and the dark astral arts of the Saurians, Lemurians became masters of Biomancy. They grow their cities from massive trees, shape bones into weapons, and gene-splice riding mounts from alchemical slurry.
- The Great War: They engaged in a millennia-long conflict with the Saurians, a war of Biology versus Sorcery.
- Isolation: Their Golden Age ended not with a bang, but a whimper—a virulent plague engineered by fighting Lemurian tribes that wiped out the majority of their population. The survivors retreated into deep isolation, becoming introspective scholars who guard their gene-banks and biological technologies with zeal.
The Fourth Root: The Nephillim Also know as elves, mind masters, servants of the King in Yellow
- Specialists in mind magic and illusion
- The Cataclysm: The Primeval Gods sacrificed themselves to contain The Outer Lords, destroying the kingdom of Atlantis.
I wonder…
- If the Dvergar were created by the 1st Root (Elementals) and the Saurians by Set, does this imply the Dvergar are the only “natural” guardians of the planet?
- How does the Lemurian use of “Biomancy” interact with the Vril Corruption? Is flesh more susceptible to mutation than stone?
- Is the “Lawgiver” of the Lemurians actually a renegade Atlantean from the future, or a benevolent entity from the Dreamlands?
- Do Humans (5th Root) have a latent ability that the older races fear, such as immunity to the Yellow Sign?
- The creator gods - Primeval Powers? Sovereigns? Architects?
