Spiral Dynamics: The Evolution of Value Systems
Spiral Dynamics is a bio-psycho-social model of human development that maps the evolution of worldviews, values, and consciousness. Based on the research of Clare W. Graves and popularized by Don Beck and Chris Cowan, the theory argues that human nature is not fixed. Instead, we evolve through specific stages (or “vMemes”) in response to changing life conditions.
The model uses a color-coded spiral to represent these stages. Crucially, this is a holarchy: each new stage “transcends and includes” the previous ones. We do not lose the earlier capacities; they remain dormant or active layers within our psychology.
First Tier: Subsistence Levels
The first six levels are characterized by the belief that their worldview is the only correct one. This leads to inevitable conflict (“The War of the Memes”).
- Beige (SurvivalSense): Instinctive, biological survival. Food, water, warmth, sex. (Examples: Infants, severe senility, survivalists).
- Purple (KinSpirits): Tribal, magical, animistic. Safety in the group, obeying ancestors/spirits. (Examples: Sports team superstitions, tribal cultures).
- Red (PowerGods): Egocentric, impulsive, heroic. Dominance and submission. “might makes right.” (Examples: The terrible twos, rebellious youth, feudal warlords).
- Blue (TruthForce): Absolutist, obedient, orderly. Submission to a higher authority (God/State) for future reward. Right vs. Wrong. (Examples: Fundamentalist religions, strict patriotism, Boy Scouts).
- Orange (StriveDrive): Strategic, materialistic, scientific. Individual achievement, rationality, and capitalism. “Win-win.” (Examples: Wall Street, The Enlightenment, Silicon Valley).
- Green (HumanBond): Egalitarian, relativistic, communal. Human rights, ecology, sensitivity to feelings. Hierarchy is bad. (Examples: Postmodernism, DEI initiatives, Scandinavian social democracies).
Second Tier: Being Levels
The shift from Green to Yellow is termed the “Momentous Leap.” Here, the ego diminishes, and fear drops away. For the first time, the individual realizes that all previous levels are necessary for the health of the spiral.
- Yellow (FlexFlow): Integrative, systemic, functional. Knowledge and competency are valued over rank or status. Can navigate various viewpoints without getting stuck in them.
- Turquoise (GlobalView): Holistic, collective individualism. Sensing the world as a single, interconnected organism. The “Union of feeling with knowledge.”
The Dynamics of Change
People do not move up the spiral simply by choice. Evolution occurs only when Life Conditions become too complex for the current Mind Capacity to handle. This creates dissonance (the Gamma Trap), forcing the mind to reorganize at a higher level of complexity to survive.
I wonder…
- Is the current global “Culture War” primarily a conflict between the Blue (Traditional/Order) and Green (Postmodern/Equality) vMemes, with Orange (Business/Science) caught in the middle?
- How can organizations be structured to accommodate employees operating at different center-of-gravity colours (e.g., Red sales teams, Blue accountants, Green HR, Yellow leadership)?
- Does the internet accelerate the movement through these stages, or does it create “echo chambers” that reinforce and rigidify existing levels (especially Red/Blue)?
